Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh in collaboration with the Information Training & Outreach Centre for Africa (ITOCA), South Africa organized a National Workshop titled Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) National Training Workshop Bangladesh»supported by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the UN, from 2nd to 3rd April 2018. The workshop was held in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Inauguration session held on 2nd April 2018. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) was the Chief Guest, and the Chairperson was Professor Md. Ruhul Amin, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture of SAU, the Special Guests were Professor Dr. Md. Sekender Ali, Hon’ble Pro-VC, SAU & Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Haque Beg, Treasurer, SAU and Imma Subirats, AGORA Programme Manager, FAO of UN was the Guest of Honour, the programme was presided over by Dr. Md. Anwarul Islam, Librarian, SAU & Programme Coordinator.

The main objective of this workshop was to:

  • raise awareness of key trends in scientific publishing in agriculture, environmental science, forestry and related social sciences, and
  • enhance capacities to access and use information resources available on the AGORA platform.

The course comprised lectures delivered in a classroom setting, hands-on exercises, and group work. Some of the activities were involved accessing relevant live websites and portals on the Internet and others few issues were conducted offline.
Total 105 participants from the various institutions of Bangladesh attended the National Training Workshop. Imma Subirats (AGORA Programme Manager, FAO of UN) conducted both the days as resource person while different participants assisted her for interactive sections.
Before ending the programme there were a certificate award sessions for the participants in both days.

Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA):

  • Enables developing countries to gain access to an outstanding digital library collection that includes information on food, agriculture, environmental science, and related social sciences;
  • Provides a collection of more than 6,100 key e-journals and 23,000 e-books to more than 3,400 institutions in more than 115 countries;
  • Is designed to enhance the scholarship of thousands of students, and researchers of agriculture and life sciences in the developing world;
  • One of the five programmes that make up Research4Life. The other four are Access to Research in Health Programme (Hinari), Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE), Access to Research for Development and Innovation (ARDI) and Global Online Access to Legal Information (GOALI).
